Ways To Counteract Bad Behaviour

1. Double up on toys: Your parrot could be experiencing boredom and acting out in frustration. Adding new toys enriches their environment and gives them something to do. Try various types of toys that are enriching in different ways. Some toys are meant for foraging or destroying, shredding, some have bells. Experiment with toys made of different materials, for example, different types of wood.

2. 12 hours of sleep: Your parrot may need some extra time to sleep. Typically the recommended amount of hours that your bird should sleep is 10 hours. You can also place your bird’s cage in a new location if they are maybe in a room that has noises on until late at night (e.g. a TV room). Also, you could cover your bird’s cage with a blanket or a towel to provide more darkness for them.

3. Provide a play stand: Out of cage time is necessary daily. Providing your bird with a play stand gives them a dedicated spot where they can safely sit and play while out of the cage. Play stands can be made out of PVC or wood. Add different types of toys onto the play stand so that they have a different experience on their play stand to their cage.

4. Enrich with a variety of foods: There are so many fruits & vegetables and other kinds of foods that are safe for birds. When making parrot chop you can use different foods each time. You can also incorporate foraging methods when giving the food to your birds.

5. Clicker training: This is a fantastic way to train and bond with your bird. Training for positive behaviors will limit the number of negative behaviors your bird will show. This also can tire your bird out as a fun activity thus limiting excess energy which they could express use for negative behaviors.
