Who we are:
By Abi Strachan
Cheeky Beaks Parrot Rescue was established with one goal in mind. To help birds.
We are a registered NPC, and animal welfare organization.
Our entire organization operates on a nationwide network of carefully vetted foster homes that cater to the different needs of the birds that come into our care. We do not have a central location where we ship all the birds and place them in giant aviaries. As we have noted in previous articles, this is not always the healthiest environment for companion birds. We do however have several sanctuaries and aviary options available to us should this be in the best interests of the bird.
This is where our process comes into play.
Each and every bird that comes into our organization is assessed by multiple team members and fosters in order to determine their specific needs and what is best for them. Our network of fosters and collaborators function to provide this and we then facilitate the placement of the surrendered bird to the perfect setting. This is not a quick or simple process and we take it very seriously.
Our process allows each and every one of the hundreds of birds we assist every year to be assessed individually, with one-on-one attention, in order to determine what is best for them. With multiple people sharing the load, we have many brilliant minds and experts determining what would give the bird the absolute best quality of life. Sometimes this process takes months, but it is vitally important for the welfare of the bird that these assessments are carried out in order to ensure perfect placement.
Sanctuary facilities are vital in animal welfare, and we rely on them for many birds that are unsuited to home environments. Our work doesn’t detract from what they do, nor does their work detract from what we do. After all, we should all being doing this in order to offer the very best to each and every bird. Sanctuaries are amazing resources and we are incredibly grateful for their support, allowing us to place birds that aren’t suitable for home environments. Many birds do in fact thrive in more “wild” settings, and without the true sanctuaries we would not be able to offer this, so it’s not that we’re are against sanctuaries, we just aren’t one specifically. Cheeky Beaks functions as whatever the birds need us to be.
Our system allows us to offer individual attention to every bird, every day, in order to determine exactly what is best for them. We operate like a well-oiled machine, and every one of us plays a part in every single case, which gives us the ability to assess the bird from different angles and together formulate a plan that benefits the bird most.
So while we are not a “sanctuary” we stop at nothing to offer every bird their own nirvana.
