Our Stance on Breeding…

While breeders that provide a high standard of care for their birds do exist, somewhere… as a rescue organization, dealing with the unwanted, abused, and abandoned birds across the country, we are aware of the abundance of available birds, making the need for breeders obsolete.

Breeding for profit is not viable, and any breeding should be done for the betterment of the breed – in other words, for conservation purposes – an endeavor that involves huge expenses, constant veterinary care, and the absolute highest standards of care. This means that in order to actually make a living wage from it, the cost per bird for sale would be astronomical, and unaffordable. Most breeders cut corners in an attempt to reduce costs. Correct genetic and health testing is omitted, leaving you with the unknown in the offspring. This means that genetic faults are common, inbreeding occurs regularly and a large portion of all offspring will never survive into adulthood.

Cheeky Beaks Parrot Rescue has taken a stance NOT to support breeders in any way, ever. We will never place a bird into a home where breeding takes place, regardless of how or with which species this may be done. Anyone who breeds with any animal, reptile, fish or bird species’ moral standing does not align with ours, and we cannot condone sending a bird into such an environment, even if that bird would not necessarily be placed into a breeding situation itself. It’s the ethics that matter.

With parrots being one of the top 3 rehomed pets, there is no need to add to the population. Unlike dogs and cats and more domestic animals, it is impossible to breed a certain temperament into a bird, leaving the possibility for sudden behavioral changes as well as total unbonding wide open. This then creates a never-ending circle in bird rescue.

Being that there is an equal chance of a hand-reared hatchling unbonding from you just like an adult bird would, there is no logical reason to opt for baby birds over adult rescues. The same training can be done on all birds, regardless of their backgrounds, with the same outcomes.

Our policy and stance on breeding has never, and will never change. As an organization, we cannot support, condone or even passively accept any form of breeding (barring conservation initiatives that reintroduce endangered species into their natural habitat). -Abi
